What to Expect at Your Dental Implant Consultation

As much as you may want dental implants, you can’t just get them at a moment’s notice. You’ll need to see your dentist first to check whether treatment is truly right for you. With that said, what should you (or anyone else) expect from a dental implant consultation? Your Massapequa Park practice is here with an answer to this question. So, read on to learn four things that always happen at a dental implant consultation.

A Preliminary Chat

To start off your consultation, you’ll briefly chat with your dentist. This talk will cover the broader points of dental implants – what you want from them, whether you qualify for treatment, etc.

Note that the discussion mainly consists of your dentist’s questions. To confirm if dental implants suit you, your dental provider will ask about your dental records, oral health history, etc. Their questioning may even involve paperwork you need to fill out. Once they review your feedback, the dentist can decide if the consultation should proceed.

An Oral Exam

Depending on how the chat goes, it’ll be followed by an oral exam. This assessment looks at your smile’s strength and determines if it could support implant posts.

This exam will closely check your teeth, gums, and soft mouth tissues. To that extent, it’ll mainly be done by eye but involve dental X-rays and 3D imaging as needed. Just remember that the dental team will know if you’re ready for implants once it’s over. If they decide you don’t qualify, they may suggest you undergo preliminary dental work first – gum disease therapy, bone grafts, etc.

A Review of Treatment Options

Your dentist will share their thoughts after your exam, as well as their suggested treatment options. Dental implant work will be among these recommendations if you qualify.

Just to be clear, you’ll have final say over your choice of procedure. A dentist drafts your treatment plan based on your wants, so they’ll tailor it to fit the situation. From there, they’ll explain your plan’s steps, timeframe, recovery period, and so on. You should take this information seriously when it’s provided.

A Brief Q&A

At the end of your consultation, you’ll have a chance to ask further questions about dental implants. This period gives you a solid grasp of what your treatment will involve.

You shouldn’t hesitate to ask what’s on your mind during the Q&A. A good dentist always wants you to feel good about treatment, so they’ll gladly answer your questions. Addressing your concerns also helps you learn vital points about the upcoming implant process.

Once you know the points above, you’ll be ready for your dental implant consultation. Keep them in mind as you head into your visit!
