Invisalign continues to gain popularity as an effective alternative to traditional braces. The clear plastic aligners fit over your teeth to move them to their ideal placements without the need for bulky metal brackets and wires. That said, because they’re not permanently installed, you’re more likely to interfere with your treatment timeline by losing or damaging your aligners. This can be especially true when you travel because your routine is interrupted, and you don’t have all the same supplies with you. If you have a trip coming up, keep reading for 4 tips to maintain your Invisalign when you’re away!
Tip #1: Set a Timer
You already know that it’s important to wear your aligners 22 hours every day to prevent your teeth from reverting to their previous positions. However, when you’re traveling it’s tempting to let that fall by the wayside. It’s much more relaxing to sip drinks by the pool all day and forget about your pearly whites. Doing so can hinder your progress, though. Instead, set a timer while you’re eating and drinking to remind you to put your Invisalign back in so that you don’t fall too far behind.
Tip #2: Bring Extra Aligners
If possible, try to take an extra set of trays with you on your journey. You wouldn’t be the first patient to accidentally throw theirs out after nibbling snacks on a long flight or misplace them once you arrive at your destination. Having backups, even if it’s an older tray, is better than having none at all. If you don’t have any spares and something happens while you’re away, don’t panic. Contact your dentist to let them know so they can be ready to get you back on track when you come home.
Tip #3: Check the Water
Depending on where you go, you might not have access to drinkable tap water. If it’s not safe to consume, you probably shouldn’t brush your teeth or rinse your aligners with it, either. In that case, only use bottled water when cleaning your mouth. Be sure to take bottles with you if you’re spending long hours on a bus, plane, or train for the same reason. You’ll need water to rinse your mouth as well as your plastic trays after any mid-journey meals and might not have any other source.
Tip #4: Make a List
There’s a lot to take care of before you can head out on your trip, like ensuring your home is secure and that there’s a plan in place for someone to care for your pets. Between that and packing enough outfits or making sure you have all the right chargers, it’s easy to forget hygiene basics. Write out a list so that you won’t forget your toothbrush, floss, mouthwash, additional aligners if you have them, and their carry case for storage.
Now you can enjoy peace of mind knowing that you’ve prepared properly to preserve your smile while you’re away!
